BETONG: It was a proud day for local football as Betong FA hosted Malaysian League side Kuching City FC in a friendly that drew a crowd of 1,000 — marking the biggest football event yet for the district.

The match, held on Monday (Jun 30) at the Betong Sports Complex, saw Kuching City FC deliver a dominant performance in their Sarawak Tour opener, defeating Betong FA 7-0 under the sweltering late afternoon sun.

Betong Division Football Association (BDFA) president Abang Suhordie Abang Zaini expressed his gratitude and excitement over the visit.

“Actually, as the hosts we had invited Kuching City as part of our association’s annual activities. In terms of the match, we understand that BDFA was not fully prepared.

“For us, this match felt like an international-level fixture — truly the most high-profile match we’ve hosted so far.”

“Even though it was a friendly, we were determined to give our best against a competitive side like Kuching City, who finished fourth in the Malaysian League last season,” he told Sarawak Tribune after the match on Monday (June 30).

He also thanked Kuching City FC for selecting Betong as one of the stops on their Sarawak Tour.

“We would like to thank Kuching City FC for choosing Betong as one of their Sarawak Tour destinations ahead of the Malaysia League season.

“We hope the match offered fans in Betong an entertaining and memorable experience,” he added.

Kuching City will continue their Sarawak Tour with upcoming matches in Mukah (Jul 2), Sibu (Jul 3), Bintulu (Jul 4), and Miri (Jul 5–6).
