KUCHING: The architecture and legacy of the Kuching Civic Centre remain preserved as the landmark reopens for public use.

Deputy Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Datuk Snowdan Lawan, said the restoration of the Kuching Civic Centre at Taman Budaya here reflects the preservation of the state’s architectural heritage and legacy.

“Commonly known as Dewan Suarah, its conceptual design was intended to bring together Sarawak’s multi-ethnic communities under one roof, beneath the shade of the iconic Melanau hat design known as the Terendak, or tapou or serao in the Melanau language,” he added.

“It was, and still is, a symbol of unity among our diverse cultures, a vision strongly propagated by our late Chief Minister, Tun Pehin Sri Taib Mahmud, and it shall remain so.”

He said this when asked by reporters for his views on the newly completed restoration of the Kuching Civic Centre, which cost RM5 million and has now reopened.

The centre, completed ahead of schedule, is now open for public use and features facilities including a wedding and multipurpose hall, restaurants, an observation tower, playgrounds, ample parking, and recreational areas for family activities and public functions.

“Our responsibility is to maintain its cleanliness, prevent vandalism, and ensure it is not misused.

“Inculcate in ourselves a sense of belonging and ownership of our own property. It is our asset,” he said.
