KUCHING: The Kuching Folk Dance Festival 2026 reflects the Kuching South City Council’s (MBKS) commitment to building an age-friendly city while promoting social participation through cultural activities.

MBKS Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng said the initiative was in line with the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) recognition of social participation as one of the key domains of an age-friendly city.

He also said an age-friendly city focuses on providing opportunities for people of all ages to actively participate in community activities.

“Cultural activities encourage senior citizens to remain socially connected, physically active, and mentally engaged, while fostering greater understanding and respect between generations.

“Cultural events such as folk dance bring together children, youths, adults and senior citizens in a shared celebration of culture, creating opportunities for meaningful interaction between generations.

“These are essential elements in building a caring, inclusive and resilient community,” he told reporters during the event media conference at the MBKS here today (July 15).

Wee added that the festival also serves as an important platform to promote appreciation of culture, strengthen unity among communities and preserve traditional performing arts.

“As our city continues to develop, it is equally important that we safeguard the traditions and cultural heritage that define our identity.

“Folk dance is more than just a performance. It tells the stories of our communities, reflects our history and values, and connects one generation with the next,” he added.

A total of 32 performance groups, comprising 25 local groups and seven from outside Kuching, will take part in the festival, which will be held on July 26, 2026 (Sunday) at 7:00 pm at the State Hockey Stadium.

“A total of 543 dancers from the 32 performance groups will take part in this year’s event, making it one of the largest folk dance festivals ever organised by MBKS.

“The festival will showcase the richness and diversity of Malaysia’s cultural heritage through vibrant traditional dance performances, musical accompaniment, and colourful costumes representing various communities,” he said.

He also said that the festival will allow participants and audiences to appreciate the country’s diverse traditions while reinforcing the values of mutual respect, harmony and unity that form the foundation of Malaysian society.

“Admission is free and the public is invited to join us for an evening filled with captivating cultural performances and a celebration of the beauty of Malaysia’s multicultural heritage,” he concluded.
