THE proposed optimisation plan for Kuching International Airport (KIA) and Miri Airport will be implemented under the 5th Rolling Plan next year.

According to Transport Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin, upgrading works for KIA amount to RM65 million while for Miri Airport it amounts to RM60 million.

He explained that the proposed upgrade in Miri Airport involves an increase in terminal capacity from two million passengers a year to three million annually.

“Other than that, the proposed scope of works for the expansion comprises a new building extension and upgrading of the Rural Air Services (RAS) area; additional new Check in Counters (CIC); new offices area, signages and wayfinding; new baggage handling system (BHS).

“In addition to that, we also proposed the improvement and upgrading works at the first floor departure hall area; pier expansion and additional two passenger boarding bridges (PBB); and automation towards airport 4.0,” he said.

He was delivering his Ministerial winding-up speech at the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting on Monday (May 13).

Lee stated that considering broader regional development goals alongside airport optimisation, this integrated approach will lead to more sustainable and effective solutions for enhancing the passenger experience and supporting economic growth in the northern region.

“In this regard, my Ministry will also review various studies for Miri including the ongoing Greater Miri Development Masterplan study which also covers the Miri airport infrastructure development plan, in addressing the issue raised,” he said.

On another matter, Lee emphasised his ministry’s dedication to collaborating with all cargo stakeholders to promote a robust and secure cargo ecosystem that supports the economic growth and development of the region.

“We recognise the importance of the cargo facilities and infrastructure in Sarawak airports to the cargo business players.

“Therefore, I have also proposed for Malaysia Airports Sdn Bhd (MASB) to widen the road access to the cargo terminal at Kuching International Airport as this access route is vital not only for cargo operations but also for emergencies, connecting to the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) Air Traffic Control Centre and Tower.

“Through collaborative endeavours and proactive initiatives, we are poised to fortify Sarawak’s cargo infrastructure and facilities, thereby catalysing economic growth and development throughout the region,” he said.
