KUCHING: Eight young athletes from Hornbill Athlete Club have received a timely boost in the form of sports shoe sponsorship from Kuching South mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng.

The initiative was carried out in line with the Kuching South City Council’s (MBKS) support for the Child Friendly Cities Initiative (CFCI).

Wee noted that proper equipment, such as suitable sports shoes, is vital for youth to train effectively and should not be hindered by financial constraints.

“These youth are full of talent and determination. We must not let financial hardship hold them back.

“They are the future of our city, and we must give them every opportunity to grow, excel, and dream big,” he said after accompanying them to purchase the shoes.

Also involved in the initiative were MBKS councillors Eric Tay Tze Kok and Liew Leong Yee, who helped facilitate the sponsorship.
Most of the athletes come from low-income families and are actively involved in track and field under the Hornbill Athlete Club.

MBKS said the initiative reflects its broader vision to promote youth development and social inclusion through community-based support.
