KUCHING: Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Kuching has confirmed its Youth chairman Nicholas Wung Duk Ying as the sole candidate for Padungan constituency in the upcoming state election.

SUPP Kuching chairwoman Datuk Lily Yong Lee Lee said the decision was finalised and Wung’s name had already been submitted to the SUPP Central leadership sometime in March.

Yong speaks to reporters.

“We have already decided and resolved a potential candidate, the one and only Youth chairman Wung Duk Ying.

“Everyone in the party knows who the candidate is, and we’re all moving in that direction, not only for the people, but for the party and for the constituency because we feel that it’s really high time.

She said this when met with reporters during the SUPP Kuching 66th anniversary dinner at Theatre Hotel on Sunday (Jun 29).

Yong stressed that the selection of candidates must be based on ground sentiment and suitability, rather than top-down decisions or notions of who might be seen as “winnable.”

“People always talk about choosing a ‘winnable’ candidate, but that’s dangerous. Who can guarantee someone is truly winnable when history has shown they can still lose?

“What matters is choosing the right person, someone genuine, ready, and who truly knows the ground. They must represent the people, not be appointed just for the sake of it,” she said.

Yong added that Wung was chosen through ground surveys and internal reviews, as Padungan falls under the Kuching branch’s responsibility.

“We are not here to interfere with others, and we expect the same respect from other branches.

“For Padungan, we did our own groundwork, and we are confident Wung is the right person. The whole branch will move wholeheartedly behind him,” she added.

As for other state seats under the Bandar Kuching parliamentary constituency, namely Pending and Batu Lintang, Yong said the Kuching branch would respect the autonomy of the respective branches in deciding their own candidates.

“We will not interfere and will support whoever is chosen by their respective branches,” she said.

Earlier, Yong clarified that while SUPP Kuching is not officially treated as opposition within the party, there is a perception among some members that it is.

She attributed this perception to the branch’s commitment to truth and staying grounded in real issues rather than following popular or convenient narratives.

“You have to speak the truth and reflect the actual situation on the ground, not just rely on what the press says, as that can be very dangerous.

“And we reject blind loyalty and personal agendas. Some people are put off from joining because they feel the internal environment is fake, shaped by those with hidden motives,” she said.

She warned that tolerating such behaviour could eventually mislead party leaders and endanger the party’s direction.

“If you allow that to continue, eventually they will mislead the leaders, bringing them moving in the wrong direction,” she said.
