KUCHING: Sarawakians will get a taste of SEA Games action at home as 16 events, including golf, archery, and muaythai, are confirmed for Kuching in the 2027 regional tournament.
Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the decision was reached during Malaysia’s second special meeting in preparation for hosting the games.
“For the 2027 SEA Games, out of 36 events, 16 will be held in Kuching.
“This has been agreed upon, but we are still waiting for suggestions from participating countries on whether to add three or four more events.
“No final decision has been made yet,” he told reporters when attending the Golf VIP Borneo Games Kuching 2025 at Sarawak Golf Club, here today (Sept 27).
Abdul Karim also revealed that golf would be among the sports staged in Kuching, with the Sarawak Golf Club (KGS) chosen as the main venue.
Other sports confirmed for Kuching include tenpin bowling, archery, taekwondo, cricket, shooting, swimming, aquatics, wushu, squash, tennis, lawn bowls, muaythai, and petanque.
“Hosting these events locally will certainly be an advantage, especially for fans here, who will be able to witness the SEA Games up close,” he added.
On Sarawak’s readiness to host the events, Abdul Karim stressed that upgrades to existing facilities, including Sarawak Stadium, would be undertaken to meet international standards.
