KUCHING: The overall crime index for Kuching last year went down by 13.02 percent or 214 fewer cases compared to the same period in 2017.
“Violent crimes recorded a decline of 0.37 percent while property crimes went down by 15.5 percent.
“This success is due to the high commitment of all branches, especially the Crime Investigation Department (CID) of all nine police stations in Kuching,” said Kuching district police chief ACP Ng Ah Lek after witnessing the handing over of duties from ASP Dinis Mancha to DSP Jesselton Mac Jillian for the post of Kuching Special Branch head here yesterday.
Commenting on a recent rape case in Kampung Kudei Baru, he said the 32-year-old suspect was arrested on Tuesday and is now remanded.
“This case is classified under Section 376 of the Penal Code. We will file an investigation paper with the deputy public prosecutor for further action.
“For information, the case was only reported to us on Dec 31, 2018 but this case occurred two months ago. The suspect had been having sex several times with the 15-year-old victim,” Ng stressed, adding that there were 10 rape cases reported last year compared to 15 cases in 2017.
