KUCHING: The lighting of Ramadan decorations at the city’s iconic White Cat statue in Padungan last night (Mar 17) underscored Sarawak’s spirit of unity, harmony and peaceful coexistence among its diverse communities.

Deputy Premier and Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian said the long-standing tradition of dressing and illuminating the landmark for major festivals reflects the values of mutual respect and inclusivity in the state.

“This is a very important landmark that not only tourists but also locals come around to take photos, and our famous cat celebrates every festival,” he said when officiating at the ceremony.

Dr. Sim added that the annual transformation of the statue’s appearance to suit different celebrations highlights the importance of unity, especially in today’s increasingly divided world.

He also extended Hari Raya greetings to the Muslim community and reminded the public to drive safely during the festive season, noting increased travel along the Pan Borneo Highway.

Meanwhile, Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng said this year’s display features the White Cat dressed in traditional Malay songket, in line with the Hari Raya celebration.

He said the tradition, which has been practised for more than 20 years, continues to evolve with new designs each year to reflect the diversity of Sarawak’s cultural festivities.

“We do not repeat the design. Every year, the colours and concepts are different to mark each festive occasion,” he said.

In his Hari Raya message, Wee called on the public to reflect on the importance of peace and harmony, noting that the festive season is an opportunity to strengthen social bonds among communities.

“The beauty of Raya is not just in the food and new clothes, but in the strengthening of our social bonds and the harmony between our communities,” he said.

He added that the ability to celebrate in peace is a result of the state’s stability and security, which should be appreciated and preserved.

Deputy Mayor Datuk Zaiedi Suhaili said such initiatives by MBKS bring together people from various backgrounds to celebrate festivals collectively, further strengthening unity and harmony in Kuching.

“This celebration is a good way for us to promote unity and strengthen our harmony so that we can live peacefully,” he said.
