KUCHING: A blend of tradition, movement, and multicultural unity took centre stage in Kuching as the Kuching Unity Dance Association (KUDA), with support from Majlis Seni Sarawak (MSS), hosted a vibrant three-day Chinese Dance Workshop from Apr 18 to 20.

The workshop brought together 46 participants, aged 13 to 62, from different ethnic backgrounds to learn about Chinese heritage and build friendships across generations.
Political Secretary to the Premier Kho Teck Wan, who officiated the closing on Sunday (Apr 20), commended the organisers and encouraged continued cultural sharing in Sarawak’s diverse society.
“By embracing and sharing our different traditions, we strengthen the peaceful and respectful spirit that defines our multicultural identity,” she said.
Led by instructor Bong Wee Kiau, who is also founder of Dancer Interface Performing Arts Studio in Miri, the workshop guided participants through intensive technical training, expressive movement sessions, and cultural dialogues highlighting the relevance of Chinese dance in today’s world.
A memorable highlight was the use of the traditional umbrella as a prop, offering dancers a chance to explore storytelling through poised and graceful choreography.
“This workshop was not only about movement—it was about connection. A connection to culture, to one another, and to the joy of artistic expression,” said organising chairman Sheleen Tay.
The event ended with a performance, where participants wore turquoise T-shirts with Chinese calligraphy and an umbrella design to reflect the culture they had learned.
