KAPIT: The Kumang beauty pageant serves as a platform to exhibit Iban cultural heritage and uphold the civilization of the community, said Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi.

The Federal Work Minister said that during the competition, both Kumang and Keling will display Iban traditional costumes to the public.

“It is not a contest centred on looks or whether the participant is pretty or not.

Nanta bite ‘duku ilang’ as a for ‘pemali’ (taboo) after receiving it as a souvenir.

“This is where we exhibit our ‘ngepan’ (Iban woman’s traditional costume), ‘sugu tinggi’ (headgears), crafts and more,” he said in his speech at a pre-Gawai celebration at Kapit Civic Centre last night (May 11).

Nanta responded to a statement published by a local newspaper where an academic had criticised Kumang beauty pageants held annually as part of Gawai celebrations as “demeaning” for Dayak women.

The Kapit MP emphasised that while showcasing cultural heritage is essential, it should align with the true essence of Kumang.

“We all understand the meaning of ‘Kumang’; it signifies the most beautiful lady. Hence, it’s improbable for us to send older women to compete.

“Let me clarify, it’s not about older women not being pretty. We want to present the finest to showcase our cultural heritage to the public.

“Therefore, if you encounter such a post, kindly leave a comment and offer advice. Look at others; they proudly exhibit their cultural heritage to ensure people are aware of it,” he said.

Also present was Deputy Minister of Digital Datuk Wilson Ugak Kumbong.
