KUCHING: The Kuching Water Board (KWB) will carry out urgent repair works on a major pipeline this week, affecting several neighbourhoods across the city.
The 1,400mm diameter pumping main pipeline, located along Jalan Highfield Light Industrial-Jalan Batu Kawa, has been in service for over 30 years and supplies approximately 170 million litres of treated water daily, operating nearly 20 percent of Kuching’s water production.
KWB said an extensive site assessment has already been completed, including pipeline
mapping and the identification of surrounding underground utilities.
“Initial repairs began on Apr 18 but were stopped due to compatibility issues of the supplied materials with the ageing infrastructure.
“KWB opted to fabricate the required fittings locally instead of waiting for parts from West Malaysia to prevent further delays, and has scheduled a second round of repair works from 9 pm on May 23 to 7 am on May 24,” KWB said in a press statement today.

The utilities company said residents in Jalan Matang from Kubah Ria to Batu 9 Jalan Matang, Taman Sri Harmoni, Jalan Sungai Tengah, Jalan Tun Abdul Rahman Yakub, Jalan Tun Datuk Patinggi Abang Haji Muhamad Salahudin, Jalan Demak, Jalan Bako, Muara Tebas, and surrounding Petra Jaya areas under the Rural Water Supply Department (JBALB) jurisdiction can expect low water pressure or a complete supply interruption during this time.
“Consumers may also experience airlocks or discoloured water during the recovery period following the repair.
“KWB will deploy water tankers to supply affected neighbourhoods to minimise inconvenience, and residents are strongly encouraged to store sufficient water,” the board said.
It assured the public that every effort is being made to complete the works as soon as possible and restore full service with minimal disruption.
