KUCHING: A landmark international exhibition bringing together 64 artists from Brunei Darussalam and Sarawak will be held at the Borneo Cultures Museum from June 20 to 26.
Titled “Neighbours in Heart, Friendship in Art”, the event features 99 paintings that celebrate shared heritage, identity, and contemporary expression.
Jointly organised by the Sarawak Artists Society and supported by Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, and Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports Brunei Darussalam, the exhibition is more than just a visual showcase.
It represents a significant step in cultural diplomacy, promoting cross-border goodwill through creative exchange.
Sarawak Artists Society president Sebastian Jong said the initiative reaffirms their commitment to meaningful regional cooperation through art adding that the event highlights the enduring artistic and cultural ties between the two neighbours.
“The exhibition also forms part of Sarawak’s strategy to elevate itself as a premier cultural destination.
“By integrating art into tourism, the state aims to attract a wider audience, promote sustainable tourism, and grow its creative economy.
“Further, the initiative is seen as a key milestone toward the establishment of the proposed Sarawak State Art Gallery, envisioned as a permanent institution to preserve and promote the state’s visual arts and heritage.”
He added that the exhibition will be officially launched on June 21 by Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah with performances and a guided tour of the gallery set to accompany the ceremony.
“Adding to the experience are several public programmes.
“These include an Art Talk titled “Lines of Growth: An Artist’s Evolution” on June 22, featuring six artists from both Brunei and Sarawak sharing their creative journeys.
“An Abstract Painting Workshop on June 23, led by Pengiran Wahab Hassan, will invite participants to explore emotion, texture, and storytelling through colour and brushwork. It is open to both beginners and seasoned artists.”
On the same day, a cultural workshop on the dastar, sinjang, and traditional Malay dance is also scheduled, offering insight into Bruneian-Malay ceremonial dress and movement. Participation is subject to confirmation from Brunei delegates.
