BERLIN: Lando Norris of McLaren topped the final practice session for the Formula One Mexican Grand Prix on Saturday, reported German news agency dpa.

The title contender clocked the fastest time of 1 minute 16.633 seconds to beat the Ferrari of Lewis Hamilton by 0.345s. George Russell of Mercedes completed the all-British top three.

Championship leader Oscar Piastri was fifth, 0.599s behind team-mate Norris, while defending champion Max Verstappen of Red Bull was right behind in sixth.

With his victory at last week’s United States Grand Prix – the third win in four races – Verstappen agreed that he has joined McLaren drivers Piastri and Norris in the title fight.

The Red Bull driver trailed championship leader Piastri by 104 points just five races ago, but has slashed that gap to 40 points.

Piastri has failed to finish on the podium in three consecutive races which also allowed Norris to move within 14 points with five race weekends left.

Qualifying for Sunday’s race is later on Saturday. – BERNAMA-dpa
