KUCHING: Sarawakian activists are planning a large-scale convoy to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the 722 Sarawak Freedom gathering, to be held at the Song Kheng Hai Ground, Padungan.
The event serves as a grand tribute to the late Pehin Sri Adenan Satem, fondly known as Tok Nan.
Tok Nan’s historic decision to declare July 22 as Sarawak Independence Day and a public holiday marked a significant moment in Sarawak’s history.
Scheduled for July, the convoy will travel from Lawas to Teluk Melano, honouring Tok Nan’s enduring legacy.

At the same time, it will serve as a movement to educate and empower Sarawakians about their historical independence.
Speaking at a press conference at Telang Usan Hotel today, Sarawak rights activist Peter John Jaban recalled the last major celebration in 2015, that attracted over 10,000 attendees.
He emphasised the need to reignite the same spirit.
He also urged Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg to continue Tok Nan’s legacy.
“Sarawakians want our Premier to stand firm and fight for the rights of all Sarawakians,” he said.
“As a tribute to Tok Nan, we always remember his words: ‘Jaga Sarawak bait-bait’.
“We want our present Premier to uphold the same commitment – to protect and defend Sarawak from any subtle external threats.”
The convoy is set to begin on July 18 in Lawas, passing through Brunei and making stops in major towns before culminating in a grand gathering at Song Kheng Hai Ground in Kuching on July 22.
Organisers anticipate participation from motorhomes, big bikers, four-wheel drives, and other enthusiasts eager to be part of the journey.
Sarawak rights activist Tan Kok Chiang highlighted the convoy’s role as an educational platform, particularly for rural communities.
“It’s important that rural areas are included in this awareness campaign.
“Not everyone has access to historical records, and this event brings knowledge directly to the people,” he said.
The convoy will take multiple routes to engage with as many communities as possible.
Organisers will be distributing pamphlets, holding discussions, and interacting with villagers along the way to enhance their understanding of Sarawak’s independence history.
“Many remain unaware of the significance of July 22, 1963, and the event aims to bridge this knowledge gap,” said Tan.
The organising committee is currently working on securing permits and sponsorships to ensure the event’s success.
There are also plans to invite Tok Nan’s family members to the grand gathering.
Organisers encourage all Sarawakians to participate, whether by joining the convoy or celebrating in their own communities.
