KUCHING: A night of loud engines and dangerous riding ended abruptly when traffic police swept city roads, impounding 31 modified motorcycles and issuing over 100 summonses during ‘Ops Samseng Jalanan’.

The six-hour operation covered Jalan Central Timur, Jalan Tabuan and Jalan Tan Sri Ong Kee Hui, where officers stopped 75 motorcycles and checked 82 individuals.

Kuching police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said 31 motorcycles were confiscated under Section 60 of the Road Transport Act 1987.

“Initial checks found that the motorcycles have been modified from their original structure and required further inspections.

“The team also issued 151 traffic summonses against motorists for various offences,” he said.

Alexson said the enforcement reflected consistent action by traffic police throughout the year.

Between Jan 1 and Dec 21, Kuching traffic police arrested 26 individuals for suspected offences under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

During the same period, 298 motorcycles were confiscated under Section 60 of the same Act, while 2,622 summonses were issued for various traffic offences.

He said similar operations would continue to keep dangerous riding in check and improve road safety.

In light of this, motorcyclists are urged to ride responsibly, stay away from illegal racing and avoid unauthorised modifications that could turn deadly.
