LAWAS: Lawas has the potential to become a key driver of telecommunications and multimedia development in Northern Sarawak, paving the way for the state’s digital economy growth by 2030.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan said telecommunications can no longer be seen as a luxury, but as a basic right that enables people to connect, access information, and enjoy economic and educational opportunities on par with major cities.
“I want to stress that all these initiatives will only succeed if everyone plays their part.
“Implementing agencies, contractors, and the community must ensure that telecommunications projects run smoothly without disruptions such as vandalism or equipment theft.
“What matters most is building better infrastructure and delivering the necessary services so that communities can actively participate in all aspects of development,” he said during the Sarawak Telecommunications and Multimedia Development engagement session for Limbang Division at Hotel Seri Malaysia here recently.
He noted that Lawas’ strategic location bordering Sabah, Brunei, and Kalimantan positions it as an important gateway for international trade, investment, and tourism.
The event also witnessed the exchange of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA) and the Malaysian Nuclear Agency to strengthen cooperation in telecommunications development, research, and digital technology innovation.
The collaboration is expected to ensure that telecommunications infrastructure in Sarawak meets national standards, remains safe, and supports the rollout of Sarawak’s Digital Economy 2030 agenda.
