LAWAS: Residents in the Lawas parliamentary constituency have been urged to prepare themselves and seize the opportunities arising from a wave of infrastructure and economic projects set to transform the area.
Lawas Member of Parliament, Datuk Henry Sum Agong, said several key projects are currently underway or in the pipeline, particularly in Trusan, including the upgrading of the main road into a four-lane carriageway, the construction of a new Trusan Bridge and the proposed Siang-Siang Bridge.
He added that other major developments such as the new Lawas airport, the deep-sea port in Kuala Lawas, the construction of a MARA Junior Science College (MRSM), as well as the Ba’kelalan road linking to the Indonesian border, are expected to bring substantial economic spillover effects to the local community.
“Development will take place, but if the local people do nothing and simply watch, those opportunities may slip away.
“Therefore, we must be prepared and make full use of the facilities and infrastructure provided to improve our own economic standing,” he said.
He said this when visiting the residence of Penghulu Liaw Soon Teck in Trusan in conjunction with the Chinese New Year celebration on Tuesday.
Henry emphasised that infrastructure progress must be matched with the readiness and proactive mindset of the local community so that they do not merely become bystanders to the rapid changes taking place in their own area.
On a separate note, he pointed out that Chinese New Year is no longer celebrated solely by the Chinese community but has become a nationwide festivity symbolising harmony and unity among Malaysians of diverse backgrounds.
“We want to see this spirit of cooperation continue, not only in strengthening unity but also in driving development together,” he added.
