KUCHING: State Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki expressed condolences over the passing of economist and academician Datuk Dr Madeline Berma, describing her death as a major loss to the nation, particularly Sarawak.

He said Madeline was a highly respected figure whose contributions to higher education, research and knowledge development had left a lasting impact, including her work in policy thinking and economic development discourse.

“On behalf of the Sarawak Public Service, I extend my deepest condolences to the family of the late Datuk Dr Madeline Berma. Her passing is a great loss to the country, especially Sarawak,” he said in a Facebook statement.

Meanwhile, Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek also paid tribute to Madeline, acknowledging her significant contributions to the academic world and community development.

“Her services and contributions, particularly in advancing society through academia, will always be remembered. I extend my condolences to the entire family,” she said.

Bandar Kuching MP Kelvin Yii said he was shocked by the news, recalling his privilege of meeting Dr Madeline and learning about her dedication to empowering underprivileged communities in Sabah and Sarawak.

“May her soul rest in eternal peace,” he said.

Madeline was widely recognised for her work in economics, education and social development, and was regarded as a leading voice in shaping discourse on inclusive growth and regional development.

She reportedly passed away at her residence in Bandar Baru Bangi, Selangor, at 11.30 am today (Dec 30).
