By Maya Green
When I opened my eyes, I thought I saw,
Someone was sitting on the couch;
For a moment, I thought it was Seluyah,
Because it has a big face, and it sloughed.
In the legends of the tribes, jungle bound,
Seluyah once a woman, was just like them;
In a collapsed cave, his feet pinned down,
Source of shame, so he chose to stay back.
So was born, the veritable Legend of Seluyah,
The man-giant, Custodian of the jungles;
Like stories, heard in places like Pa Perah,
By the camp fires, in Borneo’s deep jungles.
