KUCHING: Bawang Assan assemblyman Datuk Sri Wong Soon Koh has called for inclusive and practical development to remain a key priority in Bawang Assan and Sibu to ensure that the benefits of progress are truly felt at the grassroots level.
In his 2026 New Year message yesterday, he said attention must continue to be directed toward improving road connectivity, strengthening support for farmers and small traders, enhancing public facilities, and creating greater opportunities for youth.
“Development must be meaningful and have a direct impact on people’s daily lives, while also strengthening the resilience of our communities,” he said.
Wong also commended the leadership of Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, whom he described as visionary and principled in steering the state’s development with the people at its core.
He said one of the most significant achievements of the state government was the introduction of free tertiary education for Sarawakians studying in state-owned universities, which he described as a historic milestone.
“This policy reflects the state government’s commitment that education is a right and an investment in the future, not a privilege reserved for a few,” he said, adding that the initiative would help nurture Sarawak’s future professionals and leaders.
Wong said that beyond education, the Premier’s leadership also drove efforts towards economic autonomy, energy security, infrastructure expansion, digital transformation, improved healthcare services and the sustainable management of natural resources.
He expressed hope that 2026 would serve as a catalyst for greater unity, progress and balanced prosperity in Bawang Assan, Sibu and throughout Sarawak.
“Let us move forward together—guided by wisdom, strengthened by unity, and inspired by a shared determination to build a prosperous, inclusive, and forward-looking Sarawak,” he said.
