KOTA SAMARAHAN: Sarawak is now aiming to implement its own education assessment system that could measure the ability of its students, said Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development Datuk Seri Roland Sagah Wee Inn.

He was reacting to federal Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek who said her ministry will not revive Ujian Pencapaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) as the ministry is currently focusing on a survey to develop the new school curriculum to ensure a brighter future for them.

“This is the only way for us to be able to know the ability and performance of our student. Otherwise you will have these students going to school and not knowing what their potentials and strengths are.

“That would be crucial later when it comes to these students entering science and arts streams in secondary schools,” Sagah told reporters after officiating at the opening of the International Conference on Education Research and Innovation (ICERI) 2023 in Kota Samarahan today.

He said the move to initiate Sarawak’s own education assessment system is also aimed at enhancing the quality of education in Sarawak to ensure that it continues to progress and doesn’t stagnate.

“Therefore, let the federal government stick to its policies, but Sarawak will implement its own education system to make assessments in future examinations,” he added.
