KUCHING: Bukit Semuja assemblyman John Ilus has called for a balanced and constructive assessment of the recent online survey conducted by political analyst Datuk Prof Dr Jayum Jawan.

He said the survey evaluating the performance of Dayak ministers and deputy ministers should be seen as an opportunity for improvement.

“To me, it can be taken in both ways, positive and negative.

“Can this be a wake-up call? Can it be taken as positive to improve their performance? Let us be fair in our assessment,” he said.

The survey, which included less than 200 respondents, highlighted the performance of 15 out of 18 Dayak ministers and deputy ministers.

However, John raised several critical questions about the methodology and scope of the study.

“Why only for the Dayak ministers and deputy ministers? Why can’t it be all?” he asked.

“Why only 15 out of the 18? Why were the respondents less than 200? If by sampling, at least a certain percentage of the Dayak population should be represented.”

He also suggested that respondents from the constituencies represented by these ministers and deputy ministers should have been prioritised to ensure a more comprehensive perspective.

Another key point raised was the need to identify specific areas of weakness or underperformance highlighted in the survey.

“What are the criteria or particular areas they are not good or weak at?” he inquired, noting that such details could guide actionable improvements.

The survey on the performance of 18 Sarawak Dayak ministers and deputy ministers showed only three received approval ratings above 50 per cent.

Its findings may have raised eyebrows but John believes that they represent an opportunity to foster dialogue and drive change, ensuring fairness and accountability in the evaluation of public service.
