THE Constitution of the State of Sarawak (Amendment) Bill, 2025 is crucial to ease the growing workload on ministers currently overseeing multiple portfolios.

Katibas assemblyman Lidam Assan said that many ministers are now handling two or even three ministries, making it increasingly difficult to maintain efficiency, oversight and timely delivery of development programmes.

“Our people are waiting for results. Our resources are ready, but capacity gaps must be addressed decisively,” he said this when debating in support of the Bill at the august House, here today (Nov 24).

He stressed that the amendment is necessary to ensure better focus and performance at the ministerial level.

Lidam added that a larger Cabinet would also enable broader geographic representation, particularly for rural and remote constituencies which risk being left behind without focused ministerial attention.

Describing the amendment as a strategic reform rather than an administrative change, he said it would strengthen accountability, improve coordination and support fair distribution of development across urban and rural areas.

In voicing his support, he said the move aligns with the state’s vision of achieving a prosperous, inclusive and sustainable future under the leadership of Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) Government.
