AS of May of this year, a total of RM863,174 has been spent under the Low Income Family Empowerment (LIFE) initiative.

Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Minister Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah said that this amount was spent on the provision of equipment to 185 individuals comprising 100 participants from recovery communities and 85 participants from low-income households.

“Through this LIFE initiative, allow me to share two success stories from vulnerable communities.

“The first story is about a woman who was formerly involved in drug and substance abuse but had skills in cooking.

“With the support provided under the LIFE initiative, she successfully started a food stall business that is now receiving encouraging support from the local community. Thanks to her efforts, she is now self-reliant and earning a monthly income of over RM2,100,” she said.

She said this in her winding-up speech at the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting here today (May 27).

The second story, Fatimah added, is about a former member of a recovery community who has a deep interest in photography. Through the LIFE initiative, he received assistance in the form of photography equipment.

“Now, he has successfully developed his career as a full-time professional photographer, earning a monthly income of over RM1,800.

“In addition, through the Programme Randau Pembangunan Sosial (RPS) platform, he was once invited to share his life story and his recovery journey to inspire other members of the recovery community,” she said.

Fatimah added that these successes reflect the presence of help-seeking behaviour among the recovery community in Sarawak, which is their willingness to seek assistance in their recovery journey.

“This also shows that a strong support system and collaboration among agencies play an important role in providing assistance, promoting access, supporting recovery continuity, and effectively restoring the social functioning of this group,” she said.
