KUCHING: While interest among Sarawakian students in pursuing medicine at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) continues to grow, only a limited number qualify for the Yayasan Sarawak Special Scholarship due to strict eligibility requirements.
Deputy Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee said the scholarship is not automatically awarded to all medical students and applicants must fulfil several predetermined criteria before they can be considered.
“For the previous intake, 105 of the 150 students admitted into the UNIMAS medical programme were from Sarawak, highlighting strong local participation in the field,” he said.
He said this during a press conference on the announcement of the STPM 2025 results here at Meeting room, MEITD yesterday (June19).
“Yayasan Sarawak provides a special scholarship for Sarawakian medical students, but the number of recipients remains limited because applicants must meet specific requirements,” he said.
Dr Annuar added that interviews for this year’s intake are still ongoing and the final number of Sarawakian students offered places in the programme has yet to be confirmed.
According to him, the scholarship initiative forms part of the Sarawak government’s broader efforts to encourage more local students to pursue medical studies while addressing the state’s long-term healthcare workforce needs.
