BINTULU: LION Combat Gym Miri’s investment in youth development paid off handsomely after its nine-member team secured eight gold medals, one silver, and three special awards at the Bintulu Amateur Muay Thai Challenge (BAMC) Vol. V.
The Miri-based club’s nine-member squad recorded a 90 per cent win rate against some of Sarawak’s top amateur Muay Thai athletes during the tournament held at Naim Street Mall here yesterday (July 25).
The club also swept three major individual honours, with Syed Naufil winning the Super 4 Champion (48-51kg) Trophy Fight title, Scarlet Else emerging as Super Fight Champion in the women’s 40kg category, and Alexzander Madang receiving the Best Boxer Award.
LION Combat Gym Miri owner Eric Ting Zhi Xuan described the achievement as a testament to the club’s commitment to developing young athletes through discipline, dedication and quality coaching.
“We are proud of every one of our fighters. These results are not just about winning medals—they are about building confidence, discipline, resilience and good character in our young people.
“Sport gives our youth a positive direction and teaches them values that will benefit them for life,” he told Sarawak Tribune today (July 26).
Eric also called on organisations, businesses and the wider community to continue supporting youth sports, stressing that competitive opportunities play a vital role in nurturing future champions.
“We hope more organisations, businesses and members of the community will continue supporting youth sports. Every opportunity to compete helps young athletes gain valuable experience, stay away from negative influences and proudly represent Miri and Sarawak on bigger stages in the future.
“Together, we can create more champions, not only in sport but also in life,” he added.
He also expressed gratitude to the athletes, coaches, parents, sponsors, event organisers and supporters for their unwavering commitment, saying their collective efforts were instrumental in the team’s success.
