KUCHING: The Lions Nursing Home successfully held its annual food fair 2025 today at its premises along Jalan Stutong, off BDC here, drawing strong community support for its continued mission to care for the elderly.

Kota Sentosa state assemblyman, Wilfred Yap Sau Sin, representing Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, expressed his appreciation to the Lions Clubs for their dedicated work in the community, highlighting the importance of their initiatives for Sarawak’s ageing population.

“Our society is becoming an ageing society and projects like this are exceptionally meaningful.

“Too often, we focus only on the younger generation but our elderly also need love, care and attention,” he said in his speech.

Yap also conveyed the Deputy Premier’s personal appreciation to all Lions members for their continued service to the community.

Touching on state policy, he said the Sarawak Government remains committed to caring for the people from birth until old age, including the existing RM3,000 funeral assistance.

“The Premier has also indicated that if the state’s economy continues to grow, a fixed pension for the elderly may be introduced in the future – a move that would be a first in Malaysia,” he added.

During the event, Yap announced a RM10,000 contribution from his own Minor Rural Project (MRP) fund to support the home’s fundraising efforts, adding to the RM388,000 already raised.

Proceeds from this year’s fundraising will be used to upgrade the home’s ageing flooring to meet Ministry of Health standards, rewire the electrical system, and carry out essential maintenance, including CCTVs, office equipment and appliances.

Such improvements are vital in supporting the home’s comprehensive services, which include daily nursing care, physiotherapy, rehabilitation and its role as a teaching unit for nursing and medical students.

The Lions Nursing Home remains steadfast in its founding vision of providing a “home away from home” for the elderly – a place of dignity, healing and hope.
