KUCHING: The Adult Literacy Programme is a vital initiative, offering a second chance at education for adults who previously lacked access to basic skills in reading, writing, and arithmetic.
Having said this, Batu Kitang assemblyman Datuk Lo Khere Chiang pointed out that literacy not only improves daily life but also boosts self-confidence and strengthens individuals’ contributions to their families and communities.
“We all know that a high literacy rate in society is one of the key factors in a country’s development.
“I am very pleased to see how this programme not only gives participants the opportunity to master basic literacy but also helps them apply this knowledge in other aspects, such as reading recipes for business, understanding official documents, and managing basic finances.
“This is a step towards empowering communities and improving their standard of living,” he said.
He said this in his speech during the graduation ceremony for the programme at the Sarawak State Library building here yesterday.
On another note, Lo also urged more constituencies and local communities to follow this programme’s example by collaborating with the Sarawak State Library, public libraries, village libraries, and digital community centres to implement similar initiatives.
“With support from various parties, this programme has the potential to become a model that can be applied in different areas to ensure that more Sarawakians benefit and have the opportunity to improve their literacy levels.
“I am confident that through collaboration between elected representatives, government agencies, and the community, literacy programmes like this can help more individuals enhance their basic skills, thereby contributing to Sarawak’s overall socio-economic development,” he added.
Lo also expressed great pride in the 12 graduates from Kampung Haji Baki, who have proven that learning has no age limit.
“Their success in completing this programme is proof that the desire to learn and improve oneself cannot be measured by age.
“I am very proud of their efforts and confident that the knowledge they have gained will bring great benefits to their daily lives,” he said.
