MIRI: Literature has been described as the “heart” of a society’s soul, playing an important role in shaping emotional balance, intellect, and civilisational values.
Deputy Premier, Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, said literature is not merely a medium of writing, but rather the pulse that brings thought to life and conveys humanitarian values to society.
He said that just as the heart ensures human survival through a steady beat, literature serves as a driver of social wellbeing by maintaining the emotional and intellectual balance of the community.
“If the medical field safeguards physical health, then literature plays the role of preserving spiritual wellbeing and building civilisational values that continue to evolve with the times,” he said.
He said this while officiating at the 13th World Chinese Writers Conference, which was held at a leading hotel here on Saturday.
Dr Sim stressed that Sarawak is now moving towards a comprehensive development vision encompassing the economy, education, technology, and culture, where literature plays an important role as an element of soft power that adds value to the state’s progress.
He linked literature with the concept of holistic wellbeing, where physical development such as housing must be balanced with spiritual development.
“Houses provide shelter, but literature provides space for the soul,” he said.
