BINTULU: Security at all liquefied natural gas (LNG) facilities in the district has been raised to the highest level following possible threats targeting Malaysia’s key energy asset.
The threats were sent via short message service (SMS) using a phone number registered in Indonesia.
Efforts are ongoing to identify the individual responsible for issuing the threats.
Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mancha Ata said authorities regard the matter as serious, given LNG Bintulu’s status as a vital strategic asset for Malaysia.
To counter the threat, security measures in the area have been raised to the highest level and they will remain in place until the threat is fully resolved.
“The situation remains calm and under control.
“Nonetheless, members of the public are advised not to speculate or spread unverified information that could cause unnecessary concern,” he said last night.
Anyone with information related to the threat, are urged to contact the Bintulu district police headquarters (IPD) operations room at 086-318304.
