KUCHING: The Sarawak Tourist Guides Association (SkTGA) is urging local authorities to restore and reopen two of Kuching’s historical landmarks, the Observation Tower at the Kuching Civic Centre and the Front Yard of the Kuching Old Court House, to revitalise the city’s tourism appeal.

The Observation Tower, which stands 243 feet (74m) tall, was inaugurated on Aug 1, 1988, offering breathtaking panoramic views of Kuching and its surroundings.

However, due to years of neglect, the once-prized landmark has fallen into disrepair. Its twin lifts are barely functional, and previous rooftop food and beverage ventures have failed, leaving the structure underutilised and forgotten.

Edwin Lim, Chairman of SkTGA

“These landmarks were once the crown jewels of our tourism industry, offering breathtaking experiences for both tourists and locals alike,” said Edwin Lim, chairman of SkTGA, during a press conference on Friday (Feb 21) at Telang Usan Hotel.

“We urge local tourism authorities to recognise the immense potential of the Observation Tower not just as an ordinary building, but as a vital attraction that can elevate Kuching’s tourism experience.”

SkTGA is also calling for the restoration of the Front Yard of the Kuching Old Court House, which has been repurposed as a car park. This historic site once served as a ceremonial ground for the Guard of Honour during the opening of the Council Negeri session under the Brooke and Sarawak Governments.

“As a listed heritage building compound, this area should not be used for private parking,” Lim stated.

“Instead, it should be transformed into a tourist-friendly space, similar to the Dutch Square in Melaka, where visitors can admire and photograph landmarks like the clock tower and Brooke Memorial while experiencing the vibrant atmosphere of Kuching.”

In conjunction with International Tourist Guide Day 2025, SkTGA is calling on the relevant authorities to take swift action in restoring these vital tourism assets.

“With the right focus and investment, the Observation Tower can once again be a must-visit attraction, offering tourists an unforgettable experience of Kuching’s beauty,” Lim added.

“Let us restore these treasures for the enjoyment of future generations.”

SkTGA invites all stakeholders and the public to support this initiative, ensuring that Kuching’s historical landmarks regain their rightful place as icons of the city’s tourism landscape.
