SIMUNJAN: The role of local council members in the local government administration system is vital and should not be taken lightly.
Public Health, Housing and Local Government (Local Government) Deputy Minister, Datuk Dr Penguang Manggil, said council members serve as a crucial link between the people and the government.
“They are responsible for conveying feedback, complaints, and the needs of the local community to the authorities.
“Council members are the eyes and ears of elected representatives and the Sarawak government.
“They play a strategic role in ensuring the voices of the people reach the higher levels of governance,” he said.
He was speaking during the swearing-in ceremony for Simunjan District Council (MDS), held at Dewan Mesra Simunjan on Wednesday.
Penguang also stressed that the effectiveness of council members depends on their understanding of three key ordinances that form the backbone of local government administration: the Local Authorities Ordinance, Local Authorities Financial Regulation, and Local Authorities Service Regulations.
He added that a deep understanding of these ordinances is essential to ensure that all decisions and actions taken align with government policies and public needs.
Penguang also assured that the ministry will review the allowance rates for local authority council members in Sarawak to ensure they are commensurate with the responsibilities carried out.
A total of 31 individuals were sworn in as council members of MDS for the new term beginning April 1, 2025, until March 31, 2028.
The ceremony began with the oath-taking by MDS chairperson, Sanuyah Mohamad, followed by her deputy, Mohammad Zaini Morshidi, and the other council members.
Also held was a signing session for the Declaration of Acceptance of the Council Member Position and the Anti-Corruption Pledge, led by Sanuyah.
