KUCHING: The Magistrate’s Court here fined a local man RM500 in default two weeks in prison for possessing 12,900 cartons of cigarettes without reasonable excuse.
Chieng Kai Shyang, 30, from Saratok, pleaded guilty before Magistrate Ling Hui Chuan to the charge framed under Section 37(1) of the Sarawak Minor Offences Ordinance 1958.
He was found in possession of the contraband without reasonable excuse at Jalan Stampin here at around 3:10 pm on August 19.
Based on the case facts, a police team raided a house during ‘Ops Taring Alpha 1’ and found Chieng inside the premises.
Further checks led to the discovery of assorted cigarettes suspected to be untaxed, with an estimated value of RM4,000.
Investigations found that Chieng had failed to provide an explanation regarding the possession of the cigarettes.
Inspector Nur Shafiqa Nyaie Ilin prosecuted while he was unrepresented by counsel.
