KUCHING: The Sarawak foundry and engineering industry is poised to play a key role in supporting the state’s renewable energy drive.

The sector is expected to contribute to fabricating aluminium frames for solar panels and maintaining clean energy systems as demand for renewable technology grows.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said solar energy, alongside hydrogen and hydro, will be central to Sarawak’s energy transition, creating new downstream opportunities for local industries.

“Solar panels need frames, and these frames are aluminium. This is where your association can come in to fabricate frames for solar panels,” he said when addressing the Sarawak Foundry and Engineering Industries Association’s 31st anniversary dinner, here last night (Oct 4).

Abang Johari added that solar energy deployment would not be limited to rooftops, but will also include floating and elevated solar farms, as well as wall-mounted panels in future housing projects.

He also noted that maintenance of solar installations will be another area of economic potential.

“In order to maintain the panels, if we have experts to carry out the work, then we can sustain the use of what we call renewable energy,” he asserted.

The Premier emphasised that engaging in fabrication and maintenance will enable local engineers and technicians to gain essential skills, contributing to Sarawak’s broader goal of embracing new technology while nurturing homegrown talent in the renewable energy sector.
