Local man arrested for cable theft at electrical substation

BINTULU: A local man was arrested by police during ‘Ops Lusuh’ on suspicion of trespassing and cutting cables at an electrical substation along Jalan Johari Sunam 2 here on Thursday (March 19).

According to Bintulu District Police Chief, Supt Nixon Joshua Ali, the arrest was made at 5:50 am by a team from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) following a tip-off.

‘Ops Lusuh’ was done in collaboration with SESCO (Sarawak Energy Bhd (SEB)) Auxiliary Police.

“During the raid, the 29-year-old suspect was found inside the substation compound while cutting cables.

“Several cables and fuses that had already been cut were seized, along with various tools such as wrenches, pliers, screwdrivers, knives and other equipment believed to have been used to cut the cables.

“Police also seized several electrical system components, including batteries, fuses and other equipment for investigation purposes,” said Nixon.

Initial investigations revealed that the suspect has prior criminal records involving property crimes and drug-related offences.

The case is currently being investigated under relevant legal provisions, and all seized items have been taken to the Bintulu District Police Headquarters for further action.
