KUCHING: A local man was arrested for alleged drug trafficking after narcotics police seized RM11,940 worth of cannabis during a raid last Monday (July 14).

Kuching police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said the operation was carried out by the Narcotics Crime Investigation Division (NCID) around 3:30 pm at a house in Bandar Baru Semariang.

The 25-year-old suspect was taken into custody after police discovered 37 plastic packets containing 398 grammes (g) of cannabis in his possession.

“The suspect tested positive for tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the active compound in cannabis, but has no prior drug-related criminal record.

“He has been remanded for seven days until July 22 to facilitate further investigation,” he said.

The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for trafficking in dangerous drugs.

Upon conviction, the offence provides for the mandatory death penalty or life imprisonment, and if not sentenced to death, no fewer than 12 strokes of the cane.

Alexson encouraged the public to continue reporting any drug distribution or abuse activities in their area to the nearest police station to help curb such crimes together.
