KUCHING: A 25-year-old local man was fined RM10,000 or six months’ jail by the Magistrates’ Court today for operating an online gambling machine using his mobile phone.
Muhammad Izad Ramli pleaded guilty when the charge was read before Magistrate Mason Jaro Lenya Barayan.
He was charged under Section 4B(a) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953 for operating an online gambling machine with a Vivo smartphone at a café in Tabuan Jaya here around 2:30 pm on December 5.
According to the facts of the case, a police team conducted a raid at the café and arrested the accused on suspicion of engaging in online gambling activities.
Investigators also seized a mobile phone and a piece of paper containing a user identification number and password belonging to the accused.
A report by a gambling expert later confirmed that the device contained an active online gambling machine.
Deputy Public Prosecutor, Muhammad Aidil Akmal Sharidan, prosecuted, while the accused was not represented.
