KUCHING: A 29-year-old local man was sentenced to 30 months’ jail and three strokes of the cane by the Magistrates’ Court today for possessing methamphetamine and cannabis at a village in Puncak Borneo earlier this year.
Mohamad Hafie pleaded guilty to two amended charges before Magistrate Ling Hui Chuan.
For the first amended charge, he was convicted under Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and punished under Section 39A(1) of the same Act for possessing 8.49 grammes of methamphetamine.
For the second amended charge, he was convicted under Section 6 of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for possessing 0.31 grammes of cannabis.
He was found with the prohibited substances inside a room of a house at Kampung Sri Arjuna, Jalan Puncak Borneo, around 11:20 am on January 23.
The court sentenced him to 30 months’ imprisonment and three strokes of the cane for the first charge, and seven months’ imprisonment for the second.
Both sentences are to run concurrently.
According to the case facts, a police team carried out a raid on the house following suspicion of drug-related activities.
During the raid, the accused handed over a small bag containing a transparent packet with crystalline substances.
Police also found dried leaves wrapped in paper, suspected to be cannabis.
The items were later sent to the Chemistry Department, which confirmed they were amphetamine weighing 8.49 grammes and cannabis weighing 0.31 grammes.
Prosecuting officer, Inspector Nur Shafiqa Nyaie Ilin, handled the case. The accused was not represented.
