KUCHING: A local man is staring at the gallows after he was caught with 7.45 kilogrammes (kg) of cannabis in an early morning raid on Wednesday.
The bust, carried out around 1:10 am at Naim Commercial Centre, Jalan Green, saw police seizing the drugs valued at an estimated RM23,095.
Kuching police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said the 24-year-old was taken into custody under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for drug trafficking.
“The suspect is being remanded for five days until July 7 to facilitate investigations.
“Upon conviction, he could face the mandatory death penalty or life imprisonment. If not sentenced to death, he could be whipped no fewer than 12 times,” he said.
Alexson added that the suspect tested negative for drugs and does not have any prior drug-related record.
In addition to the drugs, police also seized a Kia Picanto for further investigation under the Dangerous Drugs (Forfeiture of Property) Act 1988.
