SIMANGGANG: Parents are encouraged to support their children’s aspirations to pursue higher education at local universities, especially as tuition fees will be fully covered by the Sarawak government.

Education, Innovation and Talent Development Deputy Minister, Datuk Francis Harden Hollis said starting next year, the Sarawak government will offer free tertiary education at state-owned local universities.

These are Swinburne University of Technology, Universiti Teknologi Sarawak (UTS), Curtin University, i-CATS University College, and the Centre of Technical Excellence Sarawak (CENTEXS).

“In view of this, parents should seize the opportunity by encouraging their children to choose local universities.

“The financial burden of higher education will be borne by the Sarawak government, so there should be no reason why students cannot pursue their studies at university level,” he said.

He made the remarks while officiating at the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) Dinner of Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Saint Lawrence (M) Sabu here on Saturday night.

The Simanggang assemblyman also urged teachers and parents to work hand-in-hand in ensuring the academic success of their children.

“As a government, we have long emphasised the importance of education in its entirety, including equipping educators with relevant knowledge.

“This includes exposing students to learning methods for the modern era,” he added.

The dinner event was organised to raise funds for both the PTA and the School Management Board (LPS) of SK Saint Lawrence (M) Sabu to support activities aimed at enhancing student development.

An estimated 520 guests attended the event to show their support.

During the same event, Harden approved a Rural Transformation Programme (MRP) allocation of RM10,000 each for the PTA and LPS of SK Saint Lawrence (M) Sabu to support their upcoming initiatives.
