KUCHING: What started as a lockdown hobby has blossomed into one of the city’s sweetest Mid-Autumn success stories.

Yin Wen and her family has turned their home project, Micki Bake, into a brand that is drawing crowds for its handmade snow mooncakes.

Customers will receive a complimentary box with every purchase of four mooncakes.

Founded in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, the business has grown from humble beginnings at home to becoming a regular crowd-puller at the Carpenter Street night market.

“We started from home, and then we began selling at Carpenter Street,” 23-year-old Yin Wen told Sarawak Tribune.

The venture remains very much a family affair – starting with Yin Wen’s mother and now involving her younger sister and brother.

“It’s a family business – we all do it together,” she said with pride.

What sets Micki Bake apart is not only its strong family roots but also its focus on quality and innovation.

The snow-skin mooncakes feature flavours such as mango, pandan, pure lotus, red bean and even a unique mango-green tea blend.

Each piece is meticulously hand-moulded and hand-painted, making them as visually striking as they are delicious.

“We use moulds and hand-paint each one. It takes a lot of effort and time.

“Young people love the designs, while older customers appreciate the smooth texture and that it’s not too sweet,” she said, adding that the mooncakes appeal to a wide range of customers.

This year, the family is introducing new variants such as cream cheese, including pistachio cream cheese and tiramisu cream cheese.

Priced at RM7.50 each or RM29 for a box of four, the mooncakes remain accessible while carrying a premium, handmade touch.

Micki Bake is one of those joining the Mid-Autumn Market Festival 2025 at The Podium from September 13 to 16, and Carpenter Street from September 26 to October 6, which opens daily from 4:00 pm to 11:00 pm.

“We invite everyone to come and visit our booth. It’s our way of sharing a piece of our tradition and creativity with Sarawakians,” she added.
