KUALA LUMPUR: The Democratic Action Party’s (DAP) Central Executive Committee (CEC) will meet tomorrow (Saturday, Sept. 19) to decide on the party’s position and next steps following the conditional pardon granted to former Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, today.
DAP’s Secretary-General, Anthony Loke Siew Fook, said the party respects the King’s power to grant pardons under the Federal Constitution, and upholds the principles of a constitutional monarchy and the supremacy of the Constitution.
He said Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories), Hannah Yeoh Tseow Suan, had expressed views consistent with DAP’s principles while carrying out her responsibilities as a member of the Federal Territories Pardons Board.
“As she (Hannah) had explained, the views were conveyed honestly and candidly in the country’s interest,” he said in a statement today.
Loke said DAP had consistently called for justice and accountability over the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) scandal, including a thorough investigation into the misappropriation of funds and an independent and fair legal process for those responsible.
His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, today granted a conditional pardon to Najib, allowing him to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest until August 23, 2028, subject to his payment of a RM50-million fine.
In a statement, the Legal Affairs Division (BHEUU) of the Prime Minister’s Department said the decision was made at the 64th Meeting of the Pardons Board for the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur, Labuan and Putrajaya at Istana Negara this morning. – BERNAMA
