MIRI: A local man narrowly escaped tragedy after a raging fire tore through his home along Jalan Beluru yesterday.

The blaze engulfed the non-permanent house at around 6.20pm, reducing it to a charred shell before firefighters managed to bring the flames under control.

Fortunately, no injuries or casualties were reported as the 57-year-old tenant escaped to safety.

The Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said the emergency was first reported by Beluru police, prompting an immediate response from firefighters about 77km away.

In a stroke of luck, a team from Lopeng station was already travelling near the area to carry out a special operation when they were redirected to the burning house.

Reinforcements from Batu Niah station were also dispatched to assist.

Upon arrival, firefighters found the house beyond saving and performed the extinguishing deed using water sourced from the fire engine.

The fire was brought under control at 6.40pm and overhaul works followed to extinguish lingering hotspots and eliminate the risk of reignition.

Once the situation was deemed safe, the operation ended at 7.47pm.

The cause of the fire and losses incurred have yet to be determined.
