SPAOH: Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said longhouse chiefs must now take on a bigger role to help uplift their communities financially.

Although Sarawak has been declared a high-income region, he noted that many rural families still struggle with low and unstable incomes.

He said the exceptions were mostly oil palm and pepper farmers, who had more stable earnings through consistent market demand and proper farming techniques.

“Increasing household income is a key priority of the state government.

“So as grassroots leaders, longhouse chiefs carry the heavy responsibility of making sure this is achieved,” he said.

He said this during a pre-Gawai Dayak lunch hosted by the Rimbas Ulu Longhouse Chiefs’ Association at Rumah Mendit Unsu here today.

The Bukit Saban assemblyman pledged support from himself and local elected representatives to help longhouse communities boost their economic activities.

He also reminded the chiefs not to treat study visits to farms or handicraft centres outside Sarawak as mere leisure trips.

As such, he urged them to focus on learning modern techniques such as fertigation and hydroponics, which are gaining traction in agriculture.

“Learn how the farms are managed, what makes them successful, and share that knowledge with your followers,” he added.

In an earlier speech, Betong Member of Parliament, Datuk Dr Richard Rapu, encouraged villagers to fully utilise their National Information Dissemination Centres (NADI).

He said NADI centres could serve as a platform to promote and market local handicrafts and food products more widely.

Later, Uggah handed over letters of appointment and reappointment to a penghulu and several tuai rumah from the Rimbas Ulu area.

There are currently 32 longhouses in the Rimbas Ulu area under the association’s network.
