SIBU: A project to build a parking area at Rumah Joseph Jarrau, Tanjung Bekakap, stretching approximately 100 metres with an allocation of RM93,000, is expected to begin next week.

The project, funded under the Rural Transformation Programme (RTP) Special Fund for the Bawang Assan state constituency, is scheduled for completion within three months.

In line with this, a project handover ceremony was held on Tuesday from the Sibu Rural District Council (MDLBS) to the appointed contractor, Ismawi Enterprise.

The ceremony was witnessed by the chairman of the Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Bawang Assan, who is also the chairman of the MDLBS Standing Committee for Environment and Public Health, Councillor (Cr) Kevin Lau.

According to Lau, several months ago, the longhouse chief, Tuai Rumah Joseph, contacted him through Cr Johnny Ganning, expressing hope for a new parking area as the longhouse lacked sufficient parking space.

“We have visited the site several times, and today I’m pleased to see that the project is ready to proceed.

“This project is funded under the Bawang Assan RTP Special Fund, and it is hoped that upon completion, it will provide residents with a safe space to park their vehicles,” he said through a press statement on Wednesday.

Lau also advised the longhouse residents to cooperate with the contractor to ensure smooth implementation of the project.

Meanwhile, Joseph expressed his gratitude to Lau and MDLBS for approving the much-needed project for the longhouse community.

“We really need a parking area, especially during festive seasons or community events. Besides that, the parking space can also be used by congregants from nearby areas when attending mass at the nearby church,” he explained.

Additionally, Lau and his team were also present to witness the handover of the road upgrading project for Jalan Yong Kok, Engkilo.

The upgrading works, carried out in two phases, cover a road length of approximately 95 metres and are also funded under the Bawang Assan RTP Special Fund.
