SIBU: The parking facilities for Rumah Ali Jampi and Rumah Muja Ayun in Nanga Tutus here have been successfully completed under the Special Rural Transformation Project (RTP) Fund.
Sarawak United People’s Party Bawang Assan Branch chairman councillor Kevin Lau led his team together with engineers from the Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC) to the two longhouses to conduct the final inspection of the completed projects today.
Lau said the initiative began in March last year, during which the branch team carried out several site visits to assess the situation and engage directly with the longhouse residents to understand their needs and challenges.
“The team also worked closely with the implementing engineers and contractors, making several design adjustments according to the soil and terrain conditions to ensure smooth execution of the project,” he said.
He added in the past, residents of both longhouses relied on wooden walkways to access the front of their homes, but the structures had deteriorated over the years.

“Meanwhile, the road behind the longhouses became narrow as it was often used for parking. With the completion of the new cemented parking area, residents now enjoy safer and more convenient access and parking,” he said.
Lau, who is also SUPP Central Youth chief, acknowledged that the soft soil conditions had posed challenges during construction.
“However, with the cooperation of the contractors, SRDC and the local residents, the project was successfully completed,” he said.
He also said the completion of the project not only enhances the infrastructure surrounding the longhouses but also reflects the government’s continued commitment to rural welfare and community development through the Special RTP Fund.
“Since both longhouses are located near the riverbanks, residents still face flood-related issues during high tide or heavy rainfall.
“Therefore, SUPP will continue to work closely with the relevant authorities to explore long-term flood mitigation and drainage solutions, providing residents with a safer and more liveable environment,” he said.
