Lorry driver in fatal FRU accident remanded for four days

TELUK INTAN, Perak: The lorry driver involved in a fatal accident that killed nine Federal Reserve Force (FRU) members yesterday has been remanded for four days starting today.

Hilir Perak District Police Chief, ACP Dr Bakri Zainal Abidin, said the remand order against the 45-year-old man was issued by Magistrate Naidatul Athirah Azman at the Teluk Intan Magistrate’s Court.

Bakri said the man was being investigated under Section 41 of the Road Transport Act 1987.

The section deals with reckless and dangerous driving causing death which provides for a jail sentence of between five and 10 years and a maximum fine of not more than RM50,000, as well as disqualification from holding or obtaining a driving licence for not less than five years, if convicted.

In the incident at 8:50 am yesterday, the lorry driven by the man collided with a truck carrying 18 FRU members who were on their way back to Ipoh after completing their duties in conjunction with the Chitrapournami celebrations here.

As a result of the accident, nine FRU members who were on the truck died, while nine others suffered various injuries and are receiving treatment.

The nine members who died were Sergeant Perumal a/l Sugunanathan, 44, from Lahat, Ipoh; Sergeant Mohd Roslan Abdul Rahim, 46, from Tanjung Rambutan, Ipoh; Corporal Mohd Pozli Jaudin, 41, from Gunung Rapat, Ipoh; Corporal Nurit Ak Pandak, 34, (Kampar); and Corporal Amiruddin Zabri, 38, (Gopeng).

The other four were Corporal Mohamad Hilmi Mohd Azlan, 38, from Taiping; Corporal Muhamad Akmal Muhamad, 35, from Kuala Kurau; Lance Corporal Damarrulan Abdul Latif, 33, from Ipoh; and Constable Akmal Wafi Annuar, 28, from Lunas, Kedah.

The post-mortem on all the victims was completed last night, and the burial process is expected to be completed today. – BERNAMA
