KUCHING: A total of 107 houses have been built and repaired under the Sarawak Poor Housing Improvement Programme (PPRMS) in the Santubong parliamentary constituency since 2024.

Minister of Women, Family and Community Development Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said the programme was implemented to ensure that people, especially low-income families, have access to more comfortable housing.

“To date, under P193 Santubong, we have carried out 107 PPRS projects worth RM1.5 million specifically for housing assistance,” she said during a visit to a refurbished PPRS home in Kampung Sourabaya Ulu here today (Sept 2).

She said the cost of house construction is fully covered, but rental expenses for families who need temporary accommodation during the rebuilding process are not included in the allocation.

Nancy, who is also Santubong MP, added that many more housing aid applications are currently being processed by implementation committees in each state constituency.

She said since one of the main challenges faced is families without land, they are encouraged to apply for transit homes or rent-to-own flats at RM150 per month.

“After several years, they can own the home. This is one of the alternatives we are recommending,” she said.

She added that priority is given to families listed under the e-Kasih system, while eligibility also takes into account household income, home ownership status, and the condition of their current home.

In addition, her ministry also provides assistance of up to RM5,000 for families who wish to start small businesses.

“It is important for us to go down to the ground to ensure people are aware of the various forms of government assistance available to them,” she said.
