Lubok Antu duo shine at Asian Classic Powerlifting Championship in Uzbekistan

UZBEKISTAN: At the Asian Classic Powerlifting Championship 2024, held in Uzbekistan from Dec 1 to 10, two young Sarawakian athletes showcased their exceptional talent and resilience, representing the state and Malaysia on an international stage with pride and determination.

The two 18-year-olds, Emenuel Nyawang Walter Wat and Vicky Brain Minggang, both from Lubok Antu, are currently studying in Kolej Vokasional Betong.

Emenuel competed in the U83 Men’s Sub Junior category. He brought home a bronze medal in squat and achieved a Top 5 overall finish in Asia. His record-breaking deadlift also set new benchmarks at the state level.

Vicky was selected as a reserve in theVicky Brain Minggang however it didn’t waver his spirit to perform his best.

His dedication and determination throughout the journey left a lasting impression. This was Vicky’s first time traveling abroad and experiencing winter—an adventure that profoundly impacted him.

Panthers Powerlifting Club said the team preparation was a collective effort led by head coach and lecturer Daryl Albright Doubless John, alongside state coach Abdul Aziz Abdul Wahed and Shamsul Anuar from At the Asian Classic Powerlifting Championship 2024, held in Uzbekistan from Dec 1 to 10, two young Sarawakian athletes showcased their exceptional talent and resilience, representing the state and Malaysia on an international stage with pride and determination. “Emenuel, the eldest of four siblings, hails from Titok Ulu, Lubok Antu. His father works as a bus driver at the University of Technology Sarawak, while his mother is a homemaker. Powerlifting has transformed his life, instilling discipline, mental toughness, and a sense of purpose.

“Introduced to the sport through Panthers Powerlifting Club, Emenuel underwent structured training that enhanced his physical performance and self-confidence. Competing in Uzbekistan was a milestone for him, testing his limits against Asia’s best.

“Emenuel expressed heartfelt gratitude to his coaches and teammate Vicky for their unwavering support throughout the journey. He hopes to inspire others to embrace powerlifting, emphasizing its role in personal growth and resilience.”

Panthers Powerlifting Club added that despite competing as a reserve, Vicky’s determination and positive outlook stood out, further credits his growth to the support of his parents, teammates, and his coach Daryl.

“Vicky’s journey highlights the transformative power of dedication and hard work. He hopes to inspire other rural youths to pursue their dreams and represent Malaysia internationally.”

Panthers Powerlifting Club also extend a heartfelt gratitude to all supporters who made this journey possible, adding that their contributions were instrumental in enabling these young talents to achieve extraordinary feats.

“As we celebrate this achievement, we look forward to the Sarawak Powerlifting Closed 2025 in January, which will serve as a stepping stone for national and international competitions.

“Our goal is to qualify for the Asian Juniors and Sub Juniors Equipped and Classic Powerlifting Championship 2025 and the Asian African Pacific Powerlifting and Bench Press Championships (Classic and Equipped) 2025.”
